| Alentejo,
wide open spaces, whitewashed villages, castles and towns bearing the
legacy of the moors await the visitor.
Évora, a beautiful walled city with its roman temple, the narrow streets of the old town and many historical sites, has been declared part of the World Heritage by UNESCO. Portalegre and Arraiolos boast of its world wide known tapestries, while Beja dominates the production of wheat, olives and cork. Don't miss the small medieval towns of Monsaraz, near the frontier with Spain, and Marvão, perched high in an escarpment, or the splendid palace of Vila Viçosa, from 1501. The weather in the Alentejo is very sunny and hot in the summer. The area is ideal for artists, walkers, birdwatching (rare species), fishing, paragliding and parachuting at a small landing strip (Pista de Moitas) Montargil is a village lost in olive groves and next to the river Asor, 120 kms east of Lisbon and 110 kms from the Spanish border (Badajoz/Elvas).
